Delighted to take delivery of the new Atlas Mercury 1.5x T2.2 full frame ‘A set’ anamorphic lenses. A really lovely mix of vintage style optics in lightweight modern housing, can’t wait to get these out working.
Developed by Atlas for Gareth Edwards and The Creator (apparently), the 42mm was used to shoot parts of the film to give Gareth the vintage style elements he loved from older anamorphic pictures.
The Mercurys are an interesting mix of modern and vintage and with the anamorphic squeeze being 1.5x, they are perhaps a bit more flexible for use on cameras with sensors that don’t have an academy aspect ratio option. Despite the reduced squeeze, they still retain all the lovely anamorphic characteristics, you find on older 2x lenses. For anyone who knows anamorphic, I would say they’re a mix of Xtal express and older Kowas, but a little cleaner than both. The coatings are on the warmer side, as are the flares.
Definitely lenses to give your production a different aesthetic.
